Clean Plastic Cup To hold 50/50 Coolant and Distilled Water Solution

CAUTION: Do not follow this procedure if the engine has been warmed up. This procedure can only be done when the engine is cold. The best time to check the coolant level is first thing in the morning, before the car has been started.

Procedure

1. Locate the coolant cap in the engine compartment.
2. Remove the cap by twisting it off. After removing the cap you should see a float which shows you the level of the coolant. My car was very low on coolant so the float wasn't floating, it was just sitting at the bottom of the filler neck.
3. Mix a 50/50 solution consisting of BMW coolant and distilled water. Do not use regular tap water.
4. Add the 50/50 coolant mixture into the coolant reservoir a little at a time while checking for the level of the float.
5. Eventually the top of the float will come up towards the top of the filler neck.
6. The coolant level is correct when the top of the float just rises out of the filler neck. Do not overfill the coolant. The margin for error is not very large so be careful. Do not fill the coolant past the second marker on the float.
7. Double check the level of the float by looking at the top of the filler neck at eye level. The top of the float should be sticking out just a little bit.
8. Replace the coolant cap and tighten by hand. The cap should be secure but do not overtighten it with hand tools. Make a note to check the coolant level again in two weeks.
